Back in September I wrote about my problem with the GOP. I only thought it would be fair for me to revisit the issue since it seems to be going away.
Since I've moved to Washington, I've had the opportunity to really see the GOP from the ground level. And I have to admit, I think it's in great shape. These people are really concerned about the issues and are really hurt when their representatives don't hold to party principles. Beyond that, Republicans are really genuine; salt of the earth. Upset? Yes. With people on both sides of the aisle. But good people.
There is a disconnect between Washington DC and the party on the ground, but that gap is - at least on the Right - being closed. It has become apparent that not everyone on the Hill thinks that the Tea Party movement is "the fringe". (Apologies to the McCains - Senator and Meghan. Hate to break it to ya, but you're wrong.)
My exposure to the actual party - not the one conveyed by the media - has been really good for me. It was only a few weeks ago that I told a friend that it might be another 15 year (when I'm 40) before I have an R after my name. But that sentiment is very quickly changing for me.
Monday night I was reading Daniel while driving from Seattle to Portland (I wasn't the one driving) when the thought suddenly hit me: my refusal to be a Republican because of some unprincipled people in DC was similar to refusing to follow Jesus because of some Catholic priests. My alibi was the epitome of poor logic.
That said, I am very seriously considering putting an R behind my name. Not because they are perfect (how stupid is it that I feel like I need to clarify that issue?) but because I'm beginning to realize they are the best option.
Thoughts from a half-black, bleeding-heart, right-leaning, recently converted liberal.

Have you looked into the constitutionalist party at all? It's what Ron Paul identifies himself as (though he runs republican). It's interesing to real about, and they're a quickly growing party.
